The Great Western Bicycle Rally...........and the LVBC

2006 marks the 42nd anniversary of the Great Western Bicycle Rally. The event, in Paso Robles, is conducted annually over the Memorial Day Weekend and draws vast numbers of riders and families from California and the entire West.

Headquartered at the Fairgrounds, the area is transformed yearly into BicycleTown, USA. The “city” contains vendors, bicycle representatives, social functions, a swap meet, and cycling seminars. There are over 20 mapped rides, ranging in distance to meet the needs of all riders.

Of course, BicycleTown has a mayor. The election process is by “acclamation.” Supporters who shout, clap, stamp, and whistle the loudest at the nomination win for their candidate. This year, Club member Alana Michels holds the office - the youngest to do so in memory. Alana joins two other Club riders who have “worn the sash and tophat.” They are the Honorable B. J. Clarke ((2000) and Hizz-honor Bob Grant (2002).

For years, LVBC members have filled volunteer roles at the Rally. B. J. and Carolyn Hattrup have regularly collected nightly camping fees. Bob Grant, oversees the assembly of hadouts for Rally-ers. Nearly all Club members present help with this essential “stuffing stuff” role.

The Club’s biggest contribution to the Rally, however, is the LVBC sponsored “Huffy Toss.” This much anticipated event involves hurling a donated bike for distance. With varying categories (children, women, men) the “Toss” is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Credit two-time Club president Rich Gracyk with the Huffy addition to the GW. Rich recalls initial reluctance from Rally organizers toward the “Toss”, and remembers the “hard sell” necessary for inclusion. The event is now a permanent Rally fixture.

Member comments on the GW follow (parentheses indicate years of attendance): B. J.s (30) favorite aspect is socialization along with the Time Trial and Hill Climb.....Bob Grant (10) along with volunteer projects, is the quick-witted Huffy Toss announcer, as well as Cook for the annual Club barbecue.....Jay Getchel(17) brought his granddaughter until 2001. Jay has provided “Toss” bicycles and has already rat-holed a thrower for 2007.......The Michels (5) like the family oriented and pro-cycling atmosphere. Madame Mayor Alana favors the Star Farms Ride while Dawn appreciates the “get-away” from TV and cooking.....Dana and Barbara Manchester (9) comfortably use a motor home as base camp. Dana thinks the Time Trial and Star Farms are top rides......Mike and Carolyn Hattrup (10) began with a tent and now use a top ranked Toy Carrier. Star Farms is their favorite ride, and Carolyn notes the pavillion activities are highlights......The Masseys (4) also use a motor home. Bruce (no surprise here) llike the Time Trial and Hill Climb where he silver medaled......Ray Harris (3), finds the Cambria Triple Option his top ride pick, as does Club Treasurer Stephanie Greenley (3).....”Father of the Huff”, Rich and Kathy Gracyk (14) consider the 75 mile Parkfield Shake and Bake as a top outing..... Finally, Club President Gene Pritchett, Barbara, and family (10) have steadily moved up in trailer size and comfort at the GW. All consider Star Farms a favorite activity. Gene (again, no surprise) finds the Time Trial a top-rater.

With its “something for everyone” aspect, the Great Western Bicycle Rally is certain to celebrate its 42nd birthday with both style and enthusiasm! See for yourself!
